Dallas Entertainment Awards
Artist & Development Seminar #7 (2025)
Dallas Entertainment Awards founder and Texas soul artist Dezi 5 hosted a panel at the Deep Ellum Community Center to help attending artists understand what it takes to secure meaningful coverage from a publication like the Dallas Observer. I served as a journalist and music editor, participating with Sarah Badran (publicist, Creative Currency), Mike Ziemer (talent buyer, Third String Productions), Alex Beane (Audio and engineer specialist, The Kitchen Studios), and Darryl Ratcliff (cultural curator, Friends of Darryl). I offered my perspective on what editors and journalists look for when deciding which artists to feature, the importance of a compelling story angle beyond the music, and the value of building relationships with local press. I networked with new writers and artists, including Leslie Austin, Nojo Wallace, Kali Flower, and Lamar Adot Thomas.
China Institute - Bohan Phoenix Interview (2019)
I was asked to interview special guest Bohan Phoenix to kick off the celebration of the Year of the Pig at the China Institute. I met Bohan in 2017 during a trip to Chengdu and watched his career rise to the status it is today. During this conversation in front of a live audience, we talked about growing up in Hubei and Boston, why Eminem inspired him to take rap seriously, hip-hop embracing Asians purely for their talent, his single “YMF,” and more. A Q&A with the audience followed. You can watch it here.
Hypebeast Mic|Line - Grammy Round Table (2019)
For the Season 3 opener of Mic/Line on Hypebeast Radio, I joined Vivian Host, former host of Peak Time on Red Bull Radio, and Timmhotep Aku, former senior editor at Pitchfork, for the podcast’s first round table discussion on the 2019 Grammys. Moderated by former music editor Emmanuel Maduakolam, I gave takes on Cardi B rewriting history for women in hip-hop, Drake’s speech after winning Best Rap Song for “God’s Plan,” and my overall grade on music’s biggest night. Listen on Hypebeast.
